cookie carnival :: september round-up!
at long last. . . the september round-up!
this month the carnival busted out some sandwich cookies. Martha style--PINK GRAPEFRUIT SANDWICH COOKIES to be precise.
i have to say. after all my complaining about grapefruit. i liked these cookies. i mean, i didn't think they were fabulous. i thought the filling was waaaay to sweet and the cookies didn't have a distinctive enough flavor.
yes. i'm actually saying it. i think they should have tasted more grapefruity. i can't believe i just typed that. but it's true.
let's find out what y'all thought about them, shall we? (remember that the photo appears *above* the info about the blogger.)
first up i must thank Mari of Mevrouw Cupcakes. this recipe was her suggestion. and i always appreciate the suggestions so keep them coming.
mari agreed with me on the too-sweet-not-enough-citrus opinion. she also made a batch of lemon ones in addition to her grapefruit ones. and she tells the story of how and why that happened--which is a great read--in her post here.
reyrena of Happy Cows decided to spruce up the tops of the cookies-- "I sprinkled the tops of the cookies with raw sugar and some red sugar since they reminded me of broiled grapefruit from my parent's era." read the rest of her post here.
adam of Baking with Dynamite joined us this month. he's our first guy! yay! we did it ladies, we got some male energy into the carnival. read HIS post (and more of his fabulous blog) here.
natalie of Snooky Doodle Cakes decided to nix the grapefruit and go with orange (can't say i blame her). she also colored her frosting and it certainl looks yummy to me! read her post here.
sara of My Sweetest Day had a heckova time with these cookies. the sad part: they burned. the happy part: she used sea animal cookie cutters! read her post here.
kamalie of Kamalie's Food had this to say (and so far, i think she speaks for most of us), "Overall, they were an okay cookie, but not something I’d beat the doors down for." read the rest of her post here.
megan of My Baking Adventures went with orange rather than grapefruit. and she did what i would do in that case and used chocolate filling. such a good combo! read her post here.
natashya of Living in the Kitchen with Puppies had this to say, "I have never made sandwich cookies before - not counting sticking a scoop of ice cream between two leftover oatmeal cookies, so I was happy to try something new." read the rest of her post here.
mary ann of Meet Me in the Kitchen did something YUMMY. she used grapefruit mousse in her cookies. and her photography is so pretty. she didn't send me a pic so there is not one here. i could grab one, but you should go see for yourself! check out her post here.
sheri of Cookingmom said, "These are a pretty cookie, but I don't think they taste anything like grapefruit. They just tasted like a regular sugar cookie, only extremely sweet." WORD, sheri. i'm so with you. read the rest of her post here.
stacey of Simply Tasty is funny. she had a sort of grumpy time making these cookies, but ended up loving them. her post made me totally snort! read it here.
for another chuckle-worthy post, check out jessica of Mango Missives. "I have never been a die-hard grapefruit fan. Some of my friends in college tried to make me curb my cursing habit by making me take a drink of grapefruit juice everytime I swore. Sadly, taking a sip of grapefruit juice only made me swear more." read the rest of her post here.
kirstynn at The Evans Factor writes a hilarious post that i'm not even going to try to talk about here. she's funny! read here.
lynn at Bites and Pieces quickly realized that the sour of the grapefruit is not a problem in this recipe! read her post here.
tara of Tara's Tempting Treats is thinking about future variations, "I will definitely use this as a base again to make some different flavors and fillings. I am envisioning PB filling/choc. cookies, pumpkin filling w/ cinnamon cookies....any kind of fruit fillings...yum!" read her post here.
jacque of Daisy Lane Cakes writes a really amusing post about whether or not to like Martha. and she has this to say about filling her cookies. "I cheated and piped my icing on. I knew they would look like poo if I used a spatula." brilliant idea! read her post here.
steph of Steph Chows played along this month. read her post here. and while you are there, find out what "Poose Cookies" are!
april of Abbey Sweets had this to say, "There is not a strong grapefruit flavor to them, and I am sure that you will like them!" read her post here.
carrie of Carrie's Sweet Life played along this month after missing August. we're glad to have her back! read her post here.
christine of Cooking with Christine had this to say, "It's Martha. It has to be good." Nope. Not good. They are actually sitting in my trash can as I type this." them's fightin' words! it's true. Martha does not know everything. read christine's post here.
arika of My Yummy Life had this to say, "Initially I was apprehensive, and I'll admit it, a little disappointed as I think grapefruit is a vile vile bitter angry evil being, but I was oh so pleasantly surprised with the results." read the rest of her post here.
that's all for September. THANK YOU to everyone who participated! it was wonderful to receive emails from you all. see you in October!
